 I was under the impression that "digital cash" required that
you could, for example, email a piece of dcash - a paragraph of
bits, presumably encrypted, to your friend.

This obviously doen't apply to systems that must go through a
handshake to tranfser money.  So it wouldn't apply to Swedish
phone cards, for example.
